One of the most common questions asked by clients who have been involved in an accident is what should I have done differently.
Unfortunately, car accidents are a part of life. Car accidents happen every day in the State of Texas and especially in Houston, Harris County, and in a big metropolitan area. I don’t know if there’s been a day that’s gone by where an accident hasn’t happened in the city.
The State of Texas comes second when it comes to the most car accidents in the U.S.. Houston has been labeled the most dangerous city for driving in Texas with the highest reported number of accidents, more fatalities, and more incapacitating injury collisions than in any other city in the state.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the top 5 causes of Texas car accidents are faulty evasive action, unprotected left turns, distracted driving, speeding, and DUIs.
Here are 8 things to do if you have been in a car accident.
- Make sure everyone around the scene is okay and safe.
- If you’re able, contact the local law enforcement by calling 9-1-1. Having an officer come out to the scene is important as they will document everything that they see and observe in their report.
- Be careful what you say and do not admit fault to the accident.
- Document the scene. Take pictures, so you can have proof of what happened and how the accident occurred. The officer on the scene may take pictures and will document a diagram in their report on what they believed happened.
- Try to collect the other driver’s personal contact information, which is name, address, and phone. If possible, take a photo of their driver’s license. Also, collect their insurance information, so they can be contacted later. This includes license plate information, a picture of their ID or you can take a photo of their insurance card.
- Gather any witnesses’ contact information.
- Go see a doctor for treatment because you may have injuries that are obvious and some injuries that you’re unaware of. So, it’s very important to go see a medical professional for your own health, safety and well-being.
- Contact us as soon as possible for assistance with filing your injury claim.
