Here are 8 things to do if you have been in a car accident.

1. Make sure everyone around the scene is okay and safe.
2. If you’re able, contact the local law enforcement by calling 9-1-1. Having an officer come out to the scene is important as they will document everything that they see and observe in their report.
3. Be careful what you say and do not admit fault to the accident.
4. Document the scene. Take pictures, so you can have proof of what happened and how the accident occurred. The officer on the scene may take pictures and will document a diagram in their report on what they believed happened.
5. Try to collect the other driver’s personal contact information, which is name, address, and phone. If possible, take a photo of their driver’s license. Also, collect their insurance information, so they can be contacted later. This includes license plate information, a picture of their ID or you can take a photo of their insurance card.
6. Gather any witnesses’ contact information.
7. Go see a doctor for treatment because you may have injuries that are obvious and some injuries that you’re unaware of. So, it’s very important to go see a medical professional for your own health, safety and well-being.
